Ninth Ward

New Orleans Ninth Ward is the largest of the city’s 17 wards and is divided by the Industrial Canal into the Upper and Lower Ninth Wards.

The Upper Ninth is notable for the Habitat for Humanity Musician’s Village for displaced New Orleans musicians started after Hurricane Katrina

The Lower Ninth Ward, which hugs the Mississippi River on the “lower” side of the Industrial Canal just a few minutes away from downtown New Orleans, gained national attention for the breach of the levee and it tragic devastation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and is now the site of massive rebuilding efforts led by Brad Pitt’s Make it Right foundation. A thriving historical area in this section of New Orleans is the Holy Cross Neighborhood, which is undergoing revitalization spearheaded by Global Green and the Preservation Resource Center.
